Ever been SCAMMED?
« on: June 09, 2011, 09:39:30 AM »

Being on Craigslist can generate business, but also make you a victim of a scam.
This is the 3rd time that my husband and I have been offered a con, but thank God
I check things out first. SO ARTISTS BEWARE!

Few weeks ago, I received an email from Rebeca Alonso. She wanted to have me for her daughters' party.
She was in the UK, but was moving back to Chicago in early June. She wanted to have all the plans made,
so she wanted me to paint 75 kids over 6 hours. She even mentioned that I could have a half-hour break for lunch AND negotiated my price from $550 to $500. Sounds legit doesn't it? She said that she did not have the location tied up so she would keep me posted. Then she asked for my address so she can send me a check. I thought I would be receiving a money order.

This sounded like such a great gig; I was anxiously awaiting an envelope from the UK (I love England!!!), but it never came. Then a brown envelope postmarked "florida" arrived with no return address. Inside was 4 $500 American Express travelers checks. NO NOTE, just the checks. Now who in their right minds is sending ME $2000? I immediately got suspicious. I had not heard from Rebeca and her party was less than a week away. I played dumb and sent her an email requesting the location. No response. I ripped up the checks and then checked the internet for cons. It seemed this was another attempt to get my money.

The party date past and I send another notice. She answers that she changed the date and did I receive her check? I played dumb...NOT YET. I asked if it should be from the UK. She answered that it was from Florida, no explanation. I responded saying that I would be on the lookout for that envelope with a check for ONLY $500, correct?

I think she caught on and that her con was over. She has answered back yet.

So friends, be careful that checks you cash. This situation would make me have to pay back that amount plus fines, I'm sure. When it looks like its too good to be true...it is! LOOK OUT FOR REBECA ALONSO!

I think I received her email too... similar details.  I emailed her my booking form and never heard back.  I get weird emails like that from time to time.  It has scam written all over it!
