Does it last long?
« on: August 29, 2011, 12:26:23 AM »

I have had some inquiries dealing with FULL body painting.
Mystique from Xmen for example. How does the paint last
after sitting? Will there be a blue behind and leg marks
after they stand up? Will some of the paint on the backs of their thighs
rub off and look terrible?

Never dealt with upper leg painting, but it made me think how well it wears.
If you hold a cold drink up against your chest does it take off the make up?
Do you spray them to "fix" the makeup?

Enquiring (nosey) people need to know!!!

Fixing spray helps, but does not completely solve these problems. If you paint dark bases on dark skin and light bases on light skin, it does help with making the wear a little less noticeable. Anywhere the skin folds will have wear. And it will be noticeable if someone hits them with a drink. The trick is to do less detail in areas that have more wear and to get as close to the skin color as possible with bases so the normal wear is less noticeable.

Also, there is no sitting or restroom breaks for fully body painted models. There's natural wear at the joints, under the breasts(if they're fuller sized). Also the paint will rub off on furniture.

Models can and should take breaks its inhuman not to let them! Its always the artists who don't let their models sit down/ eat/ go to the loo that have their models, understandably, faint etc. I have seen this all over even at the world championships. Treat your models well and your artwork will last longer.

If you or your client are expecting perfection, and that paint to stay perfect, its impossible unless you do a quick design that can be photographed or whatever straight away. Or paint something inanimate, half the beauty of body paint is its alive and moves/ changes!

Loo breaks are expected and if they are girls tell them to pull aside their knickers rather than pull them down. Most of us try to paint the knicker & face region last so there will be less disturbance of the design by loo and food breaks. If I can I also have them lying or sitting down as much as poss and do the areas they sit on last:)

Like Whitney I also try and do less detail where there will be more natural rubbing/ disturbance, ie between legs, around the neck, under arms and along sides where arms touch body.

I don't use fixing sprays either, even in Hong Kong, I just occasionally coat from the neck down with something like hairspray if they will be moving around a lot or in crowds. I don't reccommend anti-sweat products either as sweat is an important process the body uses to cool down itself and stopping it usually leads to overheating and fainting at best.

how long / well it lasts depends on what you use, the climate and your models skin and what they will be doing.

I prefer Grimas & Diamond FX for body as it seems to have better staying power.

Just work within the sensible parameters and don't expect the art to still be perfect at the end of the day. World Championships etc 6 hours of paint is followed by hours of queuing for judging then photographers then stage and its usually OK at the end of that. One of my main gigs is bodypainting fans at the rugby 7s which is like the Superbowl of rugby and most are OK after a day drinking and partying in crowds.
