Out of state requests for face painting

I just had my second request for face painting out in Beaufort, SC.  I wonder if it's the same office.  I don't mind traveling, but with all the time spent driving, I've started thinking that my driving time should be worth something.

So I decided to start charging for it, I'll let you know what happens.  This job would be a 2 hour and 45 minute drive, so I told him that I'd be willing to take on his 2 hour job, if he also paid for my drive time.  I charge $90 an hour for face painting and I told him I would charge $50 an hour for the driving time portion.

We'll see if they'll have me out.  I notice that jobs in these areas of the country seem more interested in my cheek art rather than my full faces, so I think that factors in as well.  I do prefer the full faces over cheek art.

That's a LONG way to go. I have painted at fairs that are two hours from Chicago and some are asking if I do parties. I said that if I was in town (at my mom's camper) that weekend, I could manage it. But I don't think they'd want to pay me to drive in. Some claimed they would and asked for a price, but they never called.

Now with Gigmasters, I keep getting bids for Wisconsin and Indiana (not THAT far, but far enough)
and they want to book an event for one or one and half hours.  keep saying NO, that it is a 2 hour minimum,
UNLESS they live very close to my home.  With the price of gas, they will have to book me for several hours before it makes sense.

Other requests have come in for one hour parties. Good luck! It's not gonna be me. I hate to sound mean, but it takes time to get there, set up and take down. Then I could lose out on another LONGER party. But if you are my pal, I'll do anything for you!

Yeah, I didn't hear back from them, lol.    But, really, it has to be worth my while, so that's o.k.

I have a high milage vehical & would not want to drive that far. I usually try to refer them to a closer painter at that point & help out a friend. I do charge travel now for gigs 1 hour away. Mainly 'cause it'll ften close a good hunk of my day.

Just asking...what is your travel fee?

My travel fee starts at $20. If it's realllly far it goes up. Most people are just off the interstate & it's no big deal to travel a short distance, but if I'm traveling 20-30 minutes off the thruway(after already traveling 30-45 minutes) I then charge travel. I laugh when people seriously think I'll travel to Orlando to face paint(I mean Orlando hasd tons of face painters, why pay for me to travel there).
