Other good brands?
« on: July 30, 2009, 04:56:05 PM »

What is everybodies opinion on the various brands out there? I have Diamond FX, Wolfe, and Snaz. Would you recommend any other brands? For example, I like wolfe or Diamond FX white, and not to particular after that.

This is a cross-post, sorry ... I posted it in another category, but it is asked here, so I'm going to send the same reply.  Don't like to do this, though.

*********************************************************

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I use mainly 3 or  different face paints for different reasons.

Paradise by Mehron - has a lovely coconut smell, reliable, can melt in hot sun or get mushy, great coverage, black has a satin look, the teal is incredibly turquoise, and the wild orchid is beautiful.  Comes in kits called Pro Pallette - of 12 colors.  The kit holds all 12 and is very handy storage-wise

Kryolan (metallics and the UV neon colors) - the UV of orange and pink are outrageous ... one can make a rainbow cake of 3-4 colors of the UV, you need a little extra water for these colors, but effect is just magic.

Wolfe - incredible black and white.  Handy containers that screw into each other in a stack-wise fashion.  The red makes an amaing Spiderman.  The white is known to go over the black (when dry) and not blend at all into the Wolfe black.  Orange is also gorgeous for a tiger.

Starblend - great on hot days or for very small kids who might be afraid, just a kind of swipe with the sponge (no water needed) on their cheeks and forehead, and a few little swirls ... that ought to do it.

Regards, Deva

Thanks for the skinny. The starblend sounds like something I would like to try.

My current working face painting kit contains:

Kryolan - dependable and some awesome colours.  The Interferenz line is gorgeous.
Snazaroo - good workhorse and the least expensive.  Red is the definitive Spidey red, Ochre Yellow is the big cat colour.  The sparkle colours are great.
Grimas - nice colours, great pearl colours
Wolfe - love the UV, White, and red (I have black but don't carry in my kit)
Fardel - liquids in a selection of colours - Black as a back-up, white, green/gold, pink, gold, silver, teal, etc.
Snazaroo glitter powders label on the pot says "GlitterArti" - use for bases on certain designs and for princesses a lot.

For body painting I also use:
Fardel Creams - they come in pump dispensers
Tim Gratton Body Paint by Matisse Derivan in Australia - only use the black, it is amazing.  This is an acrylic based body-paint.

Anyone try the 'neon' colors or the ones that look awesome with blacklighting?

I use mostly snazaroo--

I use wolfe white, metallic white I add to colors to give it that sheen, metallic blue for my sharks, dolphins

I use detailz--for dotting

I use liquid bling--gold/silver for detailing

The wolfe red--has anyone had trouble with it not coming off that well--I heard somewhere (whether it was at a jam or conference) that people avoided the red for spidey's as it tended to not wash off as well/  Your thoughts?

I am finding I like the metallic shiney effect so am using this alot

I haven't had a chance to try the Wolfe Metallic White yet.  As for face paint staining, I learned through my Mark Reid class a really great way to get it off.  Shampoo.  Even baby shampoo works.  So if the Wolfe or Diamond Fx are staining, you don't have to scrub.  I do an initial rinse and then apply the shampoo directly to the skin.  Rub in, rinse and repeat as necessary.  It may slowly come off, but it really does work!  And like Shannon said, the glycerin soap works as well.

The only place I haven't had work for me is around the eyes.  If I use Diamond FX or Wolfe, I look like I have eyeliner on until the next day.   Cool

I've tried the neons, but not at gigs.  I would love to get into the Nightclub scene and use them there, but because of the controversy I hear over the neons, I don't feel comfortable using them on children.  My avatar pic is one of me with the neon face paints on.

I love the metallic white, I pretty much use it in place of silver now its great, I use it to make sharks, highlight things and skulls too!

I havent had a problem with wolfe staining, except sometimes green leaves a tint, but so did snaz and kryolan, I think there is something in the green dye that sticks to skin. No problems with red ever though, although I have heard that red dye of any kind it not supposed to be near the eyes at all!?! I've done it on myself plenty of times, but I tend to stay away from red on customers near eyes, just in case.

Kryolan makes a rainbow cake in UV colors that silly farm sells, I love it, it is always impressive when on. The only down side to the UV paints, wolfe and kryolan is that I have found they work well when sponged on, but not when painting with a brush to get a thick even line that lasts long on the brush like all the other paints do.

Here is the Neon Tiger face with kryolans rainbow cake

Love the tiger!  I've noticed it being harder to paint with certain uv/neon colors and it seems to be the blue and purple for me.

That's a Super Tiger, Mandi.
I usually find that the beautiful neons make the work look 'beginner'.

Now I gotta have the metallic white.
Is it FDA approved?

I've never heard of this brand.  I did a quick google search and it looks like it's offered in Europe?  The split cakes look gorgeous.

Grimas - my mainstay - HUGE range of shades and nice/ easy to use; 1 of the only non-melting in Hong Kong heat brands I could find. Love the pearl colours
Wolfe/ DiamondFX/TAG/ VIPMUA (all those brands just about identical)- love the metallics  & UV for bodies, UV for faces/ arm stuff, White for linework
Kryolan - Interferenz/ pearls/ metallics- YUM
Paradise - their black is my fave. Have a few of the others tho gave up on their metallics after too many duff crumbly ones.
Snazaroo - As Shannon said - Red is the best Spidey, but the only others I keep in are Sparkle Yellow & orange for tigers (etc) and Sparkle pinks. Am fed up with them all going gloppy even in UK heat so only those 4 faves are kept...
Fardel - liquids green-gold, blue-gold, gold, metallic green & metallic blue. HATE the small screw top easily knocked and smashed pots though.

For metallic body painting I also use Graftobian or Mehron
