Hi everyone,  I just want to learn more about face painting, from others experienced in the business.  So, if you could share the wisdom, it would be very much appreciated!   Grin

Hi Spirirtquest, welcome to the board.  Sometimes I think it's lunacy instead of wisdom, it was 96 and very humid on the 4th!  I wasn't thinking it was too much of a good thing at the time, but it was still fun. As far as sharing, ask away. I'm not the top of the food chain, but I'll share what I know.

Hello all!

I am a artist on paper but not on the face.

I am just starting out and had some questions if that was ok:-)

*What brands are the best to use?
*How much do you charge when we are just starting off? or should we just have a tip box? (small gigs)
*Can we just start off with just a simple design on the cheek? (heart/flower/snake/horse)

Thank you so much for your input in advance!!!

Hello all!

I wanted to also introduce myself. I am on the western part of the states. I am very excited to get started here and explore in the part of town. I am a teacher with a background in Art. I am currently working in a few MOPS groups nurseries and a part-time Art Instructor at a studio. I really enjoy teaching! This is why I thought why not draw on the face;-) I have been practicing on my daughter and she is loving it! I am also adding Nail Art for fun for the little kids! I am not a manicurist but I thought it would add to the whole experience! I am so glad I was able to find this site! I look forward to meeting everyone on-line!

Hi Artsy,

Welcome to the board!  What brands are you currently using?  The brand you choose can vary and is a matter of personal taste and opinion.  I can give you my opinions on the different brands that I have used and what I've heard from other artists about the brands I haven't tried yet.  Snazaroo has a reputation for safety and even carries a child toy safety rating.  I've found it to be the easiest to wash off.

Diamond FX and Wolfe brands are both very similar.  They are known for their vibrancy.  Their white is the only one I've found that is easier to paint over darker colors and not get muddied in the process.  The black makes smooth linework.  These brands are also the worst for staining.  I've found when they stain, you can wash with mild shampoo, rinse and repeat as necessary, which is fine with adults... maybe a bit trickier with kids.  You know how they hate having their faces washed!   Grin

I've tried Kryolan and I love it.  I think it's a very creamy, make upy face paint.  It's perfumed, which some artists don't care for... I rather like the smell.  I've heard that Paradise is similar... very creamy, with a coconut smell.

When I first started out at the beginning of 2008, I didn't charge a lot, because I wasn't as good and I was afraid to charge too much.  By industry standards, I still don't charge a lot.  At my first pay per face, I charged $2 for cheek art and $4 for full face.  For pay per face, I now charge either a $5 flat rate for any design they choose, or I tier it at $5 for cheek art and $8 for full face.  I've been contemplating changing that around.  My first hourly events, I only charged $40.  I only did that for two events and have slowly raised my rates and I now charge $70.  I was told by a local clown, that I should charge at least $90 as a face painter.

I look foward to getting to know you on the board!  Smiley  I would love to see some of your work.  Smiley

Hi Artsy, welcome to the board! Sherry pretty much covered the brands. I like Diamond Effects myself, the colors are very bright. She is also right in that they are harder to come off than some others, but they DO come off. I haven't tried too many of the others yet, I'll get to them sometime.
Pricing: 5 a face is a pretty good starting place. If you have the market cornered and lots of face to paint, I would go up. It will thin the line, but you probably wouldn't have got to them all anyway, either you would have run out of time, or they would get tired of waiting, (most likely).
Do you have anything coming up? If so let us know how it went, and lets see some of your practice on your Daughter!!
Good luck

Hi to Artsyface - happy to see you on the chatboard.  I have never done a face - just canvas and board.  So, I just tune in to this board for all of the information.  We do antique shows and, at the outside events, there are a lot of children being dragged along - so, I've been thinking that offering face painting to the children might make them a bit happier to be there.  Linda (linken74)
