How do I make split cakes?
« on: September 05, 2009, 07:24:18 PM »

Hi Everyone Grin,
Was wondering if anyone could advise me on split cakes I have Snazaroo.
Are they worth making?
Which colours are best to split etc?
Thanks in advance Kazx

I like to split orange and yellow in my Snaz palette that holds the 18 mls.  That way I can tap on the orange and yellow for a tiger more quickly.  Pink and purple for a butterfly or puppy.  I also love a rainbow with the 6 colors of the rainbow for things like a rainbow butterfly, tiger or cat.  For smaller split cakes, I think the combinations are endless.  I like to have white next to most colors, for different cheek art butterflies.  Like pink and white, purple and white, blue and white, etc.

I sit the cakes in the sun to soften them.  If you have a square container to put them in, you can lay them on top of each other and slice them.  I hear many people recommend refrigerating them to make them easier to work with.

I think they're worth it to make them.  I love using split and rainbow cakes in face painting.

I have had limited success so far, but I can tell you what NOT to do: They won't melt in a double boiler on the stove. Nothing doing in the microwave either. Cutting and then smashing into place, adding the next to it will work, but you wont get a nice stright line between colors.
I believe Sherry has about the best approach. The best thing for me has been just to buy them and save the time and money I waste trying to do it myself.

This Wonder Palette by Silly farm is great, it is all together, not a bunch of pots hanging around your kit and it has all the basic colors you need. Comes with a CD with lots of designs and works like a charm! Its only 30 bucks, I think that might be worth it to not have to mess around and make a bunch of cakes yourself. I can't even tell you how easy dolphins, waves, flowers, leaves, flames and butterflies are with this, no double dipping, no blending, just need a wide flat brush or sponge.

here are a few examples I have done with it.

The Wonder Pallette looks Great ~
I would get it.
Even though I wonder

Does it really work for the whole cake?
Or wouldn't the easy double-load only work when you're using the center of the cake ~

Yes it works when you are using your sponge to get bigger area or when using a small brush right down the middle to do small things.

I would like to do more with split-cakes too.  They're such a good idea.

I've been making my own rainbow-cake since long before I learned about the Wolfe-rainbow-cake.
And now I have to carry Both with me - because sometimes I like the 'relaxing rainbow' that I made,
and sometimes I like the 'neon rainbow' from Wolfe.

It's a mess to make my own split-cakes.  I just dig in - I gave up being concerned about staying neat and clean.  I get the paint all over me.  And the 'crumbly colors' get all over the table, too (I lay down newspaper first).  And I gave up worrying about 'wasting paint'.  It's going to happen.

I made my own... full size split cakes for sponging and small in a paint tray for brushes.  I posted in detail on my blog with photos... on May 12th and June 14th.

It is NOT that messy and I've never "wasted" paint making split cakes - just pick up the crumbs and press them in.  Sharp knife, room temp cakes... some of the older Snaz can crumble but the others cut fine.

Hey Shannon,  I checked out your blog and noticed you had burgundy in one of your split cakes.  Is that Snaz Burgundy?  Does it come off as a dark rusty color?  I bought these to sell, because I love the color burgundy, but I never actually tried it, because I bought it for resell.  One sold and the customer let me know it wasn't burgundy, but a dark orange.  I had her return it and when I got it and tried it out, sure enough, it was a dark, rusty, orangey color.  Not burgundy at all!

I called Snazaroo and they said that was how it was supposed to look.  A rusty orange color.  Is this your experience?  It seems so odd to me.  Anyway, just curious.

I make my own spilt cakes, and I have purchased the ones from Diamond FX, Silly Farm, and the Arty Cakes.

Those I made using Snaz I had to throw away.  I just can't make pretty designs using Snaz.

I don't see much difference in making them myself, and buying them premade.  Excepet, it is SO easy to have them ready made for you. My main complaint is they barely last a weekend.  I have to constantly be re-filling the center colors.

As to having a ton of little cakes around, I tear off the covers, and velcro them into my case.  See a photo at http://www.funfacepainting.com/book.html

Go to the center book, click on DOWNLOAD 10 PAGES FREE. On page three you can see my kit. I have 24 colors of paint in the case on the left (hard to see as it is a black case on a black tablecloth). I still have room for my water container and a glitter container in the case.

The case to the left is for my pressed powders.

The burgundy in the cake is actually Funky Foxes (made by Kyrolan) and it is really a burgundy.  I have Snaz Maroon and Burgundy and actually use them in my brown palette for animals - used them a lot for wolves, etc.

I would have assumed that the MAROON should be the rusty orange sort of colour, but burgundy should be a deep purpley red tone.  At this stage I don't know which is which in my palette (I only bought the colours once ...)

I have a Grimas burgundy that is nice.

I use lots of Snaz in my split cakes and I find they work perfectly fine and are as nice as any other brand.  It all depends on what you are wanting... The Snaz Sparkles are particularly great in split cakes!!  Really blend well and make a beautiful finish.

Your setup sure does look Professional Lily - Bravo to You!!!

I would like my setup to look that good too,
but I found
after years of doing this stuff
that I think 'Professional' looks different than the average customer thinks 'Professional' looks.
I look for the person who can get the best job done while carrying the least amount of stuff.
Because that's my goal.  I'm not a pack-mule.  I can't carry the world on my back.
And I also think it looks more Professional if I can arrive, open up my pallette in one easy step, and be ready to paint.  Well, as close as possible to that.

So how to adapt your magnificent design to my reality?
I'm wondering how you close up all that stuff for travel -
Are the circle powders in 'the top' of the case that has the split cakes?
Do you have to put individual covers all over of those squares or circles?

Where did you say your water jar is?

You do look very impressive.
