Has anyone else noticed that little boys choosing butterflies crops up fairly often? They're usually discouraged from it, but I've had a parent or two agree to it. I had one such boy last night, he kept requesting a butterfly and his mom wanted him to get something more for a boy. So I said, how about a camo butterfly? They both agreed, so I did my first camo butterfly. I'm not the best at butterflies, especially on the small and impatient! But I'll post it here.

Yeah I have a few every once in a while that want an opposite sex design. I usually just look at the parents for the nod, and go on with the butterfly on the boy. If its a disapproving parent then I have 2 "mini posters" in a plastic sleeve protector with boyish designs on one side and girly things on the other, one is cheek art designs and one is full faces. Depending on the age I just show the child the paper and ask them to pick one off the poster. Usually they find something more appropriate on the paper when all the opposite sex designs are taken out of the equation.

I have done a camo butterfly on my daughter too!

Funny...my first children's gig (just a couple weeks ago), one boy wanted Spiderman. The rest of the boys wanted butterflies. Pink and purple ones with glitter. And 2 ALSO got a rainbow on their hand. I was fine with it. The parents were fine with it, and even encouraged it. "J___ is so creative. And he LOVES butterflies." Sherry I'd love to see the camo bfly! I'm sure it's awesome! I'm not great at butterflies either...hopefully will be better soon bc the whole world wants them.

I posted the butterfly... maybe it didn't show up on your end? That seems to happen to me sometimes. I'll try to post it again below.

i'm glad to have encountered parents who do not mind their son wanting a butterfly...i usually do one with bolder colors, maybe a butterfly done in red and black even...i tried one in purple and silver and even the dad loved it...maybe we should do a gallery of "manly" butterflies...what say you?

I love the manly butterfly gallery idea!
I still am amazing that certain things are deemed on sex in people's eye. a butterfly is in insect, how is that just a girly thing? purple, not manly, my dad's favorite color, his harley is purple! dolphins, why do moms get mad about that? but sharks are boyish? I dont get parents sometimes, I really like creative kids, out of the ordinary and ones that arent afraid to be different. ~*~Mandi~*~

I agree. I wish we didn't have to be so caught up in whether it's for a boy or a girl. I've had plenty of little girls want the boyish designs too. Some parents are all for it and some are not. And not only parents, I've heard friends or siblings or just bystanders make comments about a choice a child makes.

Good idea, Sherry ~
Lol - I usually just paint the butterfly or the pink snake - whatever they ask for. But I did once have a (grand?)father who was trying to control a boy's butterfly-choice. I felt bad for the kid, who didn't know why his choice was 'wrong'. So I actually suggested, now, I don't know how this stuff comes out of me, I actually suggested that I also give the child a moustache!
And it worked. He bought the butterfly plus moustache.

The ever elusive moustached butterfly, that I'd like to see, sounds great!

When I have a little boy request a butterfly, USUALLY the parents are ok, but if they flinch, I make a big show of saying "Of course!! I do the best BOY-terflies in the whole world!" The as I work, we discuss the fact that there has to be daddy butterflies and I give them little horns and teeth on their boy-terfly. Hasn't failed me yet. Usually the parents feel much better. I think they are concerned about OTHER people judging their child for having a 'girl' design. Calling it a boyterfly gives them an out to use if someones comments on it, then THEY use the daddy butterfly line too. It's funny how it works. LOL

I agree, I do think it's more about worrying about what other people think. Which I can kind of relate to. We all want our children accepted. I love the boy-terfly idea.
