Practicing
« on: October 30, 2009, 04:48:08 PM »

Hello Everyone,
I am new to face painting and glitter tattoos.  I have already spent a mall fortune on supplies and was wondering what is the one colour (or 2-3) clours of face paint you cannot live without?

I was also wondering what you practice on?  I was looking into buying one of those practice heads but can;t wait for shipping.  haha....very impatient when it comes to parcel services.

Any new tips and tricks would be appreciated.  I have not done anyone besides my daughter and hubby.  So, I am really nervous for my first (volunteer) party next week.

Also, what are some of the most common designs that are requested by customers?

Thank you for any info. you can share with me.

I look forward to visiting here for lots of great ideas from all of you.

Hi Happy,

Besides black and white, I'd pick pink, red... on second thought, I don't think I can pick only 2 or 3 colors!  It's too hard!   Grin

I practice on myself.  I bought a practice head and picked up some Barbie styling heads from yard sales, but rarely use them.  The paint just doesn't go on them the same as real skin.  But they are good for laying out new designs.

My most requested faces are butterfly, tiger, batman, spiderman, princess faces and glamour eye I think.

Welcome to the board!  Smiley

Hi Happy - definitely black and white.  Like Sherry says.  Black, white, and a little glitter, and
We're off!

Dragons?  How do you approach the 'dragon' face?

I like that - a limited pallette.
I can imagine real bold paintings with black/white/orn.
And real lovely paintings with white/fuscia/lime.

Individual colors are great, but don't forget to use a rainbow cake of some sort. I have one that I made with yellow, pink, purple and turquoise. Great for rainbows. But many times, I am just loading the pink/purple/turquoise. Those seem to be most little girls' favorites. Try adding one to your collection, Kim! laugh

Me, again. My most popular face or cheek item for boys is the SKULL. I add yellow or red dots in the eyes to make it look more alive. Little guys also love sharks and killer whales. Girls request crescent moons/stars, puppies & kitties too (whole face and small art).

Thanks again ladies.

The Mehron is just my most recent purchase.  I have a ton of Snazaroo kits, but they only last a few faces.  I wanted to buy the bigger cakes but wasn;t sure what colours are the most used.
I bought 2 rainbow cakes, one primary colour rainbow and one pastel rainbow pallet.  I love them.

I actually have a small (volunteer boys birthdy party this Friday) the theme is Spiderman, and man, am I super nervous.  I see the designs in my head but I freeze when it comes to actually doing the faces.  I feel like I need a visual template infront of me.  Is that way too unprofessional?

I bought all the glitter tattoo stuff, a huge carryins case from Michael's with a pull out handle and wheels, the 88 pallet from coastal Scents and 40 pigments from E-Bay for the more finer and delicate designs.   I actually get super excited when a shipment is on it's way.  I have them delivered to my work, so every few days I get a treat at work.   Grinhttp://

I wish I could order new fun supplies! Right now I am saving for a good directors chair to save my back, argh.
You will get used to painting the same designs over and over again, and when you try to incorporate new ones, it wont be so hard you just have to think of the design you know that is similar and do a little modification.

Example: I know this pink butterfly design by heart and she asked for a princess, so I could just do a purple base with a few changes and turn it into a princess design.
Here is a really crap computer image of what I mean, same base area just different color, swirls in different areas, and a whole new design, but you can feel confident doing it.

That way it feels more comfortable to you! Hope it helps, and there is no problem with having a guide next to you to remind you what exactly you are painting.

Thanks Mandi.
That really helps alot.
When I paint myself, I feel comfortable, but I still forget what I want the design to look like.
I guess until I feel totally confident, more is less!
I try and get too detailed because I a perfectionist. Undecided

Best wishes,
Kim

I always take a design board or design book to work from.  I used it a lot starting out.  I now have most of my designs memorized, so I only need to pull out something to work from when it's a rarely chosen design or a new design I'm trying.

There's nothing wrong with working off of a visual. After a while you wont need it anymore, but I still use mine sometimes , especially if I haven't done that face in a while, or it's a new one I'm trying.
