Website building?
« on: December 17, 2009, 05:48:22 AM »

Anyone who is more computer savvy than I, know what the best program or software to build websites?  I've struggled with having the hosting company design it for me and I'm really not pleased with the outcome.

My new one is wordpress, I forget what the older ones were. My best mate and my wee bro are both top freelance www builders but won't do me one of course! Still, Jake said wordpress is the way to go as the current fashion/ top notch cuttin edge stuff is all done on that style of blog/ www.

I agree - many companies suck and from what I see/ hear half of them prefer using (often illegally 'borrowed') f-p pics rather than your own pics as  it fits their design/ is on their pic sites!

And there are 1000s of free 'themes'; you just addcontent. I prefer that sort of thing as I can't do coding to save my life and these ones are almost like editing a word doc, yay. Plus is instantly online if you publish it so easy to see/ check.

I prefer the ones that are user friendly and with themes as well.  That's how I did my sites, but I noticed that in the code, instead of putting something in there to promote my site to the search engines, they have words about their company which is Homestead.  That's how it appeared to me anyway, I could be wrong, because really it's like looking at a foreign language.

I'm seriously considering going back to school part-time just to learn computers... HTML.

I do all of my own websites, using an old program called GoLive, which is the daddy of Dream Weaver, the top professional program.  I also own Dream Weaver, but am too lazy to spend 8 days learning the darn thing.

However, if you are not Ms. Techie Girl, try a site like Go Daddy's, Website Tonight

You can do some really nice things - NOW.  They have all the templates, tools, gizmo's and gadgets.  Plus, it is dirt cheap.

I use webhostingpad.com for my domain and hosting. they have a built in designer with TONS of templates to choose from, you also have the option to make your own and upload it.

I think there web builder is pretty easy to use, however you are limited on where you can move certain objects. all in all i'm really happy with there service and templates.

Have you had any problems where you had to call and ask for help?  I'm just wondering how you would rate their support?

yes - and the phone tech was great, knowledgeable, fast, and spoke english very well - it was also a weird issue caused from trying to switch hosting and domain registration all at once.

I love your current website, Sherry -
I wouldn't want anything to happen to our Forum if you make a change.

But seeing that a new website is what you want -
I wouldn't want to hold you back.  So far your ideas have been right-on.

So what have you Done about getting a new website?
How's it going?

(Mine is done by a relative - I don't know anything about it - I'm just grateful)

No worries on Face Paint Chat, I like it just the way it is and I'm glad you do too!   Grin  It's my face paint supply site Funfacepaint.com that I've had problems with.  It started happening around August, when customers try to check out with Paypal, there's a glitch that tells them they've already paid and I have to email them and ask them to manually log in to Paypal and send the money.  I've contacted the company that hosts my site repeatedly and they say there's no problem and it looks like it won't be fixed.  Soooooo..... I eventually want to get a new site for my face paint store.

It's not something I can do now, like I'd like to, but it's something on my mind and when finances allow it, I want to make that happen.

Yes, that's what's frustrating to me, because I also don't know much about it.  I've pondered going back to school so I can learn computer language and be able to do things myself!

Ooooh - that's nasty.  Major project that you Must take care of -
Once you do, it will just feel normal.

This past year, I tore apart my whole office - to rip out the carpet that I hadn't vaccuumed in about 10 years.  Laid down clean very clean and very cold tiles - It meant that I got a new desk (had to throw out the huge old one carrying it down 2 flights of stairs), and building a new one from Ikea.  And I had to buy over $100-worth of cheap plastic drawers from Walmart to hold my tens of thousands of family-photos.  Looks so much better than the wobbling tower of huge boxes that I used to have.  Now my office is clean!  But I still haven't even washed the new floor yet - First I want to scan about 500 family photos into the photo-frame that I keep in the dining room.  Then things might feel normal around here.

But first I'm going to move all the stuff from a large stationary-store-display-case that I have in the Studio - I'm going to move all that stuff into this usable office - so I can build Industrial Shelving in it's place to hold the stuff from the display case as well as piles and piles of specially prepared papers.

And I hope to do that before my husband actually contracts for a big project that he's been threatening to do - He wants to rip the outside-wall off my Studio and Office so he can enlarge the house about one foot - He wants to do this to make the house sturdier - He doesn't like the way it was built.  And while he's at it, he figures it would be a good idea to get a new chimney which is on that wall.  That would mean that Everything from both my large studio and my large office would have to be carried downstairs to the small living room by the front door where Everyone walks in...

I'm tired.  I hope you get your new website.

Lol - I just remembered!  About 2 years ago, my website builder decided he wanted to redo my website with a better host.  That meant individually copying about 6 years worth of entries onto my new website - re-uploading all the photos from it ---  I had been doing that along with trying to keep up with my new posts, and I still haven't finished the whole change.  While my history, where I've been and stuff, is interesting, my Artwork has developed so much that it seems a waste of time to keep moving all those old posts.

Just keep doing stuff.
