Mardi Gras Facepainting

My job from Craigs list did happen! They had a Mardi Gras party filled with different street performers - I was the only facepainter. Yeah! There was a band upstairs and I was downstairs in the more intimate section. Unfortunately, intimate means dim red lights everywhere. Not conducive for a painter, so they gave me a desk lamp. Workable of sorts. I set up shop in a small booth. The customers sat down while I stood, squatted and knelt.
Despite those obstacles, my husband and I had a great time. I was wondering how many adults would want my services. LOTS! I had my line for the whole night. Blog folks, event planners, drag queens and every day people who all intend to call and book me like crazy. We will see how many of those promises they remember once they sober up. At least they all took business cards. It was a cheap gig ($75 + parking and free food and drinks), but I did get to put out a tip jar, have a bar to add to my resume and pass out cards. The next time this place calls, it is FULL PRICE. It was an One Time and Fun Time deal! Check out the pix in the gallery!

Sounds great Wina and bunches of fun! I have had a few gigs with the dim lighting... tricky!
O.k. now I'm heading to the gallery to check it out!

Those are the real experiences of 'party work'. What we can do under all the different kinds conditions and people - it's different than what we can do when planning alone in our own studios.
The more you end up the this particular type of situation, the better you will be able to handle it. You wouldn't be surprised by dim red lights at a Mardi Gras event.
Sometimes, when I have ridiculous expectations after the next, even though I easily slip into the plan I already know for how to handle it, it makes me wonder why I do this. It's cwazy painting under ridiculous conditions - things like dj's putting on strobes, people setting me up next to such a loud amplifier that I not only can't hear anybody - but it actually Hurts, literally Hurts my ears, crowds of demanding/screaming children and parents..... This certainly is NOT the norm, but it happens often enuf........

I now keep my old pot-holing head torch in my kit - it used to be added only for club night bookings, but after even a kids party where I was working in a dark hole its now part of my 'useful non painting emergency supplies'. Glad you liked it tho!
