Shimmer and mica powders
« on: February 23, 2010, 07:13:38 AM »

Finally getting around to sharing some of the other classes we took at the FPBAC.  I took Leah Redell's class and learned a lot.  I've thought that shimmer powder and mica powder were the same, but wasn't sure.  Leah solved the mystery!  Smiley  Glitter powder(Snazaroo anyway), shimmer powder and mica powders are different names for the same thing.

She went over how to appy the powder.  Don't just dip the smoothie into the powder, but press it.  She put a little into the lid, so she could press the smoothie and then tap it a bit to tap off the excess and then apply.

Here was the beautiful design she demo'd in class:

I originally bought a ton of the shinner powder and have never really used it.  To be honest, I don;t really like the look of it.  It kinda reminds me of kids make-up.
I have seen some pics of it in a design and have to say, that I much prefer pastel or metallic face paints.

Just my opinion.

Thank you so much for sharing all your valuable info. from the convention.  I have learned so much from you posts.

Take care.

With the Snazaroo ( that is the only one I have ) you can dip a dampened sponge in it and it goes on a bit like face paint. The gold is gorgeous. Smiley

You're welcome Kim.  Smiley

Jubob, the Snazaroo powder is mostly what I have to work with as well.  I've struggled with how to use it, but have never tried it wet.  Thanks for the info... I'll have to try that.  I have all the colors.

What did you use to apply it?

One thing I've not liked about the powders is that they seem to go on differently on different skin types. I never know what I'm going to get, so that makes me leary to try them at events. Sometimes having a very thin coverage and at other times clinging darkly to their skin.  Now that I've tried them wet, I think it may be related to how dry or oily a person's skin is.

Oily being the one that goes on darkly.  You know the type where it clings so darkly and you need to have been on your A game because that powder isn't going anywhere, wherever you put it that's where it's sticking.  I think I may have been thinking of powders in the wrong way.  Maybe I should have broke out a baby wipe and tried a little fix up that way.  All along, I've been trying to brush away any little stray sprinkles which has worked for me on certain skin types and not on others.

With the green I used a long thin brush to make lines on my hand. And I tried some orange sprayed water on the tip of my sponge and dipped in the powder and the put it on the back of my hand, when I put it on at first it was a bit thick but quickly spread out and was very strong in colour almost like the Snaz sparkle orange but thinner more sheer and felt very light, would maybe be good for small children who don't like the facepaint some find it tickly when it dries. Have a play with them it is worth experimenting with them if they aren't getting used. If I use them dry I use a Paradise Smoothy, or the pink makes a lovely blush for girls aplied with a blush brush.

Thanks Julie.  I hate to see them go to waste.  I tried them wet and dry last night with a smoothie and I really liked how they looked.  I may take pictures next time I experiment and post them, because I think I'd like to try it with a brush like you suggested.

Smoothies are real nice for applying powders.  I was surprised at how the Color really does go on Faster than when I use a brush in wet paint
