Stick on gems

For those that use stick on gems, do you use the kind that they sell in craft stores?  Or is this a big no no?  I've seen big bags of pretty gems at craft stores, but wasn't sure if this is o.k. to use.

I do buy some of mine at the craft stores.  Some of theirs are really expensive though.  I used to get some at Big Lots that were fantastic, but I think I bought them all because they don't have them any more.  I hope it isn't a no, no to use those.

I buy the packs of 20ish Swarovski crystals.  So much more beautiful.  And usually Michael's has them for 40%off.  So, not to bad.  They just look like a real jewel...not plasticy.  Know what I mean.
The only problem is....I always forget that I have them.  Huh?

With regard to these 'gems', if they are self-adhesive, how well do they stick, 1.) to paint, 2.) to skin, 3.) do they stay in place...   Or...do you add another adhesive or paint around them?
Inquiring minds want to know!

I have had some that stick really well and some that don't.  I bought some eyelash adhesive that I use sometimes.

I've never used them, but at the convention Pashur used one before he got started on a spider with a red jewel for it's body. I saw the same person the next day and the gem was still on.

I don't even remember where I got mine.  I also forget to use them.  Because they seem difficult to keep on the skin (even if I stick to the less-moving forehead).  I'm afraid to use any type of adhesive - might make it too hard to come off, might be abrasive to fine skin?
