What to do at a slow event?
« on: March 18, 2010, 07:09:27 AM »

What do you do when you're at an event, like a birthday party in someone's home and you're not getting a line.  In fact, it's sloooow and you can't seem to get many takers?  This is so awkward for me.  I don't really mind it if it's a ppf or a large corporate event, because I can occupy my time with practicing and whatnot.  But at a small event, like a birthday party in someone's home, it's really uncomfortable.  Any ideas?

Paint yourself!  Or, offer to paint the dog!

Have a victorious day, all!

It's Very difficult - and I try to avoid it like a child-who-does-not-want-to-be-laughed-at-in-school.
But it can happen.  And the Work of trying to make it seem like it's Not happening
is Exhausting - What a Loooong day.

I've always just chalked it up to an unusual day - beyond my control like cold rain.  But my first lala-response was to say "USE IT AS A LEARNING EXPERIENCE."  Like, yeahyuck.  Then, as I was writing here (It's always good to write here),

As I was writing here, a New Alison developed!  I hope I remember this - that it's in how we handle those difficult experiences that make us the sort of person I always admired.   IT'S TO ASK FOR HELP.
Some people might ask G-d, and we can also ask Other People.  To open our mouths and say "How about a beautiful face-painting for you?"  (I'm sure you're doing That already - I know I've done that easily - But my new thing is this......

If they turn you down, think of some ways to say "I FEEL LIKE A BEGGER TO BE HERE WITH NO TAKERS.  WON'T YOU PLEASE HELP ME?"

And to you Forum people - CAN YOU GIVE ME SEVERAL APPROACHES FOR HOW TO WORD THAT?

If it's a slow day for you, it's probually a slow day for everyone. I would offer to paint the neighboring vendors. It works like free advertising so even if the kids walk past you...the next booth has a reminder of your facepainting booth

I hate slow time at gigs! I eaither offer a free face painting to a passer by, just for advertizment, or I ussually just start doodling on my self! Ahhhhh I have had paintings on me at a gig, from the top of my arm, all the way down to my wrists! front and back! And all over my face! If I have something on the side of my face, I might just start adding onto it! a little at a time, thats how I do my arm! Heres some arm doodling!

Yah, but what do you all do at birthday parties?  When you can;t grab a passerby or the other suggestions?
Doddling on yourslef in someone's house would be odd to me.   :Smiley

I would feel like they are paying me to sit around.

I have experienced this too.  I try and get grampa or gramma into the action.  But, usually no adults want to be painted.  Very rare if they do.

I'm not talking about ppf events, Vi & Gina.  I mean birthday parties in a customer's home.  It hasn't happened very often, but when it has, it's looong and awkward.

I do ask Alison, but being a reserved person, that's a bit uncomfortable, especially when they say no.  Many times I just start making up balloons, hoping someone will be enticed by that.

Yeah, I usually go to an event already painted and would probably feel like you do about doodling on myself in someone's home who has paid me to be there to work.  So I don't really do that.

Oh no I can't and don't do this at a birthdya party! Only at festivals and events like "pay as you paint events" And I always go painted up myself!  well I did paint at a birthday party on Saturday It was slow for the first 3o minutes until I got someone interested in it! And then I painted non stop for three hours! Yes I agree I feel kinda dumb just standing there too! So some times I just walk around and offer painting to any adult that is there! Some times I do get a taker! Not often thou!

I would take some balloons along and some silly magic kind of stuff.  Kids still really love balloons.

I always try to look busy - clean my kit, paint self, etc. Much as I'd love to sit and read or whatever!

At some car showroom weekends (ALWAYS dead but pay well) in the UK I used to do things like help run the BBQ or decorate the place. They seem to have a list of things they must do when launching a new family car - bouncy castle, face painter, bbq, etc....

Yes, wouldn't that be nice to just pull out a good book or have a chat on the phone with someone you haven't caught up with in a while!   Cheesy  Hee, hee.

I have thought about looking into the silly magic stuff, my 5 year old just loves magic tricks.  He may be my future magician.

I don't know - ---
If someone hires us to do Face-Painting,
specifically to do Face-Painting,
I think it's better to do nothing than to switch to balloons, magic, dancing, or whatever.
Because then they might resent that you weren't Face-Painting,
not knowing that you would have been doing nothing if you hadn't changed.
They might think that you were avoiding Face-Painting
