Hmmm there is so much varity that you can do! First of all think of what are you going to use the split cake for? What design in mind? This helps me in my choices! If I want to make really really fast roses, a full design in under 2 minutes with all the glitter, I do this choice
1 inch by 1 inch square plastic pot, 3/4 of the pot  would be in red and 1/4 of the pot in white I use Diamond FX for all my split pots, when I then paint the roses there is just enough blend of the red and white to make pink, so it would look as if I used red, pink and white, but I didn't (see attached picture)
a real pretty split pot is 1/4th pink, 1/4 white, 1/4th light blue, 1/4th purple (see attached picture) this can be done so fast in less than 2 minutes also, for the gal who is affraid of face painting and you want to get done really fast, this little gal was in tears she was so affraid! And then came the smile afterwards! for fire I do  in this order white, yellow, orange, red, and just a small strip of black, so the bold outline is already there for you, don't have to go back and add any black to the design

For me if it is a small "essential" box I would bring the standard eight count crayola colors, and for the splits a red w/white, pink w/white, pink w/purple (girl/ flower colors I guess) and a rainbow split. But you can't leave out glitter.............or ballons...............or temp tatts................or or metallics..............or....so much for the small box!!

I'm curious what you use the red, black combo for?

My solids would be,

snaz white, snaz black, DFX white, DFX black, pink, red, purple, brown, yellow, orange, green, blue, turquoise.  (truly, I'd like to add in the metallix gold and silver)

For splits,

large rainbow  :  red, white & blue split  :   yellow, orange, red  :  pink, white, purple   :  lt green, dk green  :  red, pink & white.

I use gold instead of yellow for masks, it blends better and adds shimmer at the same time - I really dont use yellow that much to even have a huge cake of it.

The black/red cake is for dragons belive it or not.... I dont know why but boys ALWAYS ask me for a black and red dragon... after the 100th time I just made a split cake

How big is this small box?!

I just redid my kit (wanted to fit in all of my new goodies from Vegas without having to add another palette if I could help it), so I don't have a whole lot of solids left...essentials:

Solids:
Red
Black
White

Splits:
Pink/purple
light/dark green
light/dark blue
Gold/bronze
Int silber/strauss wine
turquoise/white/pink
red/pink/white

The list goes on.

I want to make a red/black split now! Good call.

The turquoise, white & pink combo sounds gorgeous Kristal, I might have to try that one.

I use the red, white and blue one for patriotic events, like the 4th of July and Veteran's day.  I also use it when I want to use a red, white split or blue, white split.  I just use that portion of the cake.
