How soon did your website show up on Google or other search engines

I finished my website last week. Now my friend says I need to do all the work getting it on all the search engines. Some of what I read mentioned that it takes months to be seen in a search. Is this true? Any short cuts? I do live in a big city (chicago) so am I not seeing myself, cuz I am on search page # 1,500? Lots of competition around here! Let me know!

Wina!  I am in LOVE with your website! OMG amazing, and I love that there is music!  You must tell me what you went threw to do this website?  I haven't done one yet?  I am lovin yours. You show up number one for Party Picassos face painting, so that's good.  It seemed to take mine a while to show up.  When I did a search for "face painting Chicago", I couldn't find you anywhere.  I noticed at the top that there was a Google local businesses section.  I'd try to get listed in that directory.

Thanks Gina! I have been a major procrastinator for years and years. I have had the www.partypicassos.com domain for almost a year, so I set April 1st as my deadline. I googled "free website templates" and found www.wix.com among many others. I looked through all the template samples at a few websites and found ones at wix that I liked the best.

The day planner look that I used has a fashion website in the samples. I just opened an account, picked the template and started deleting their photos and downloading and placing mine in their spaces. There were a few others that were tempting. I wanted several pages to give all the info I thought was important. Even though I am a graphic artist with over 20 years experience, it took me a while to get the hang of the template and how to put in my own copy, change fonts, add graphics and music. For my final touch, I bought the "Put on a Happy Face" song from the web and attached it to my file. The nice thing about wix is that you don't have to do it all at one time and making changes is easy. I intend to change my page pix to holiday fare as certain holidays are approaching.
