I got a phone call from a city three hours away from my home yesterday.  The gal states to me that they are having a after prom party on May 29th, from 11pm to 6am! Kind of a lock in at the high school. And she had seen me at an event here in my home town a few months ago, and picked up one of my cards.  And then she asked me what would my price be? Hmmm I thought to myself before answering, 7 hours of painting and it would be a third shift!  almost three hour drive there and another three hour to drive back home!  Hmmmmm! still thinking, before I could even give her a ball park money amount, so we had a place to start at, she speaks up and tells me that they have no money for their budget!  And she was wondering if I could come and do it for free for the safety of the high school kids, so they were not out on the streets partying! Ahhhh I thought to myself, they are not MY kids!  Nor my home town school! Ahhhhhh  NO!  I am sorry but ahhhhhhh NO! She said  "well if you can find it in your heart to change your mind can you call me? We would love for you to come, and oh yeah if you come your admission ticket will be half price, we are having snacks, soft drinks, pizza and we have hired a great band to play from 12 midnight until 3am" Well crap, hired a band, but want me for free!  I told her to have a great day, and I hope the party goes well! Hung up and tossed her phone number in the trash!  Why the nerve of that gal, didn't bother me at all untill she stated they had hired a real great band!  Well I think I am a real great face painter, good enough to get paid anyways! HAHAHAH The nerve of some people!

I agree with you! >:(Some people thing that if they just mention the word "kids or school" that you are going to say..."sure, I'm a dip____! I will do it for free!..." well NO!...Especially asking you to drive that far? Was she on crack or something? Geeee, the nerve!  I would be highly offended and not to mention perterbed(did i spell that right?)..lol And yes, you are a fantastic painter and deserve something more than that....!

I wonder if the woman was standing in front of you, instead of on the phone, if she would insult your skills in such a crazy mad way.

I work full time at the Hyatt front desk on Maui and at first I was amazed by how much people expect for free--but now I just expect them to ask for everything for free. People really feel such an entitlement these days.

Yes, it makes me wonder if they call up the bouncy house people or D.J.'s and ask them to come out for free?  I think the kicker is that your tickets would be half price.  lol     "oh, yay,  I can come, paint for free and PAY to be there!  I'm going to jump on that deal!" hee, hee.

The half price admission is maddening! I think it's actually pretty insulting. Not only have they hired a band, not only do they want you to volunteer for 7 hours 3 hours away, but they're making you pay half of the admission to get in?! WTF?!
