Any tips on teaching a face painting class?
« on: May 20, 2010, 07:35:18 AM »

It looks like I'll be teaching my first class for beginning face painters.  I'm a bit nervous, but also think it could be fun.  I think I'm looking for any advice from those of you the have given classes and/or those that have taken classes.

Maybe things you've liked that instructors did, things you didn't like or things that you would've liked for them to do.  Any tips?

are they kids or adults? Kids are so much easier, they just jump right in.

I would just pick a few simple designs and show them the basic steps to work up to those designs

practicing lines on their arm

make sure they know you once started this way, and you had to practice practice practice

one of my art lesson (of any kind) cardinal rules: Never draw/paint on their work.
If you come over and show them how to do a line by doing it for them, they will always see the final result as not their own work. The best part is when they are done and you can said "YOU did this!"

These are adults.  Mostly new clowns just coming out of clown school.

Yeah, I'm thinking of having a brush and some face paint for each of them to borrow throughout the class, so they can try some things for the "hands on" type learners.

Thanks for the advice... I appreciate it.

Hey Fancy... I still have our booklet to pass out on the class.   Any advice on the classes you've taught?

1) They want to do, not just watch.

2) Create a great workbook

3) Decide what you want them to learn, then cut it down by 30 percent!

4) Pretend you are working with 6th graders when you create the your lessons.

Yep basically teach all adults like they were kids, I did/ do, works best.

Get them to practice on their own leg/ arms 1st before wasting time/ face having a go at each other. Demo the final faces in steps incorporating what you have done, preferably on someone NOT in the class so all can see.

If the class is small enough try to circle it looking at their work & advising...
