Does Age Matter?
« on: July 23, 2009, 11:10:06 AM »

My friends daughter is really into face painting, and is very good at it too.
She's about 12 years old, almost 13, and came to me to ask if there was any way she could start a business. She told me her parents said that she could NOT advertise online and she HAS to bring a parent to every gig. I told her that I'm not sure, considering I'm new to everything too, so I'd ask my professional friends (you guys! Grin).

So what do you guys think?
Do you think a 12, almost 13, year old girl, with HIGH face painting abilities, who CAN'T advertise online and HAS to bring a parent to every gig, can start her own face painting business?
 Huh?

I think it'd be tricky, because you can't enter a legally binding contract with a minor.  The contract would hold no water.  This would also affect her ability to get insurance.  I'm not a lawyer or an expert, but that's the first thing that came to mind.

Hi - I would think that if a parent is with her, she would be fine.  It would seem like they might have to treat it as the parent's business if she was to do any public events where there would/could be some paper signing involved.  What an innovative kid she must be!  linken74

I presume it must work out similar to the music industry, As long as its treated and maintained by the parents untill they reach the adult age and then it could be passed over,  it also depends if the parents have time and the resources to help make the future bright and sucessfull,

If she is very talented then i say there is no minimum age for anything as long as parents are there untill classed as an Adult to control the future of it.

You would be better to check out the laws and working rights for more information as i am no expert within this area.

But what happens insurance wise. You know a company won't want to insure her at that age. What if she poke someone in the eye, or something like that. The person sues, because that what we have become, then what? Personally I wouldn't mind, I admire someone of that age being that gung ho. I am a sucker for a kid who makes the lemonade and sells it from a ramshackle stand they put together themselves.

If the parents are in control of it then they will be liable for insurance costs and claims, which covers her untill shes at the age to control the buisness herself.

if shes making money for it then the parents will have full responsibility because she is a minor

as i mentioned before im not an expert on this matter,

I would agree. I think she would have to wait until she is 18 before she starts making a business out of face painting
