Bummed out (not enough paint!)
« on: October 20, 2010, 10:46:51 AM »

So, my long-awaited first set of Snaz paints came in today, and I guess you get what you pay for. I bought the 16-color pallet wheel from Snaz, and I guess I did not realize how little 2ml is. I did not even look at the size.
The booklet states that the wheel is good for about 5 full face designs and about 100-150 cheek arts.
I was planning to do full faces mostly, or at least eye/mask designs.

So, Im bummed out, as I have a lot of painting to do, and now I have spent a bunch of money on something that won't last me at all. Not sure what to do at this point. Will any store-bought paints be ANY good? I'm not aiming for professionalism at this point, just paint that will look semi-decent.

Really bummed out, feel like crying, to be honest.

I am so sorry my friend!  Yes 2ml is hardly any paint!  Where are you located at?  Google a vender in your area, maybe you can purchase threw them, just the basic red, yellow, blue, black and white. You can make alote of colors from just the basics. Yellow and red makes orange, blue and red makes purple, blue and yellow makes green you will be fine with those colors. I only buy 32ml cakes or 45ml cakes, and I go threw them like theres no tomorrow! Mostly the main basic colors, and white and black OMG I always carry a couple cakes for researve in black and white.  If you can't find a vendor try Hobby Lobby store, I noticed snazaroo at their store, also Micheals, but I think their prices are way to high.  Or look up a theactrical store in your area, they carry makeup.

Thanks for the advice, I definitely should have done that.
I will head to Hobby Lobby tonight, luckily, there are a couple of those, as well as Michael's around here.
Question, regarding mixing paints - how do you actually do that?
Do you mix it as you pain (on the brush), or scoop out the paint and mix it up somehow and then put in a new container?

The paints look very solid, and I'm confused on how people transferthem from container to container, and make split cakes out of them. Unless Snaz bran is not good for that.

Snaz paints are good in my opinion. If you like the look of the wheel palette you could always buy the normal size paints and decant them into the wheel. x

just use sponges. You can you to joann's fabric shop and buy a square of high density foam, use the 40% coupon at the door! That is what I use. I use a lid of the paint cakes to make my circle. Just press the circle down tight onto the foam and cut around it using an exacto knife, then a sharp pair of scissors to cut the sponge in half, works great.  to mix colors just use tje sponge, you can load like yellow on your sponge and then rub the sponge over the red and test it on your hand and you will have orange!  just tap tap tap the color on to the face, use a spritzer bottle to add more water.  yhis way of mixing will get you buy until you load your kit, and believe me in time your kit will over flo! split pots, go to you tube, sparkling faces has an excellent video on making split pots!  Sparkling faces is our own member Vi from Texas! Check out her video's she is an amazing artist, you will enjoy her work, and her instructions are very simple to follow.

Thanks, Regina!
Ill definitely check out the videos, and good idea about the sponge. I kept thinking it has to be a special type of sponge. Smiley

Hi,
I've had(and recommended to small groups like Girl Guides) the 8 colour rainbow kit from Snazaroo. It says it paints 50 full faces and it is just 8-2ml pots. I know it isn't a lot of paint but it will actually do more faces than you think especially if you make sure you are limiting the water you use. At recent events the girl guides used 2 packs, they used them all day and I think it was the second event they had used them at. One of the reasons you won't use as much paint at the beginning is that you won't be as fast with the faces. The white and black will get used up first but you will do many more designs than you think. The paints in the halloween aisles aren't good in my opinion. I started with very small kits of snaz, wolfe and paradise and was able to make money off of them and then buy more materials in larger sizes in my favourite colours of each brand. Don't be discouraged, learn the craft and learn what you like by way of brands, brushes and colours. You don't need to have super-sized everything to start, most of us who have big kits have much more than we need we've just become addicted to the pretty colours. You do have a good start on this colourful journey.

Dancia, I couldn't have said it any better than you did! Wonderful advice my friend!  And yes you are completely right, we carry so much more than we need!  I have a rolling toolbox just packed full of supplies!  I made a wooden case to house two mehron cases! I was looking at it last weekend, some colors that I have, I very seldome ever use!   Yes I would have to agree with you, it is all about the proper mix of water and paint.

Some great painters in the UK use round baby bath sponge, cut into quaters and they are nearly like Diamond FX sponge but really soft.

Thank you all for advices, I feel much better now.
I broke into my new paints to try them, and see that actually it will last me much more than I anticipated. Now I can stress over the actual painting Smiley
